EARLY LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership
Are you concerned about your toddler’s talking? Have they got good understanding, play, motor and social skills but limited words for their age?
If you are a Parent or Carer of a child aged between 12 to 36 months who could be described as a ‘late talker’ then these videos are for you! These videos are also appropriate for family, friends, health and education professionals who might be supporting young children. By watching these videos we hope that you will feel empowered to support your child’s communication and language development in everyday life.
Children learn best from responsive adults, those who interact with them and respond to their communication attempts, in their everyday environment. As Parents and Carers you have the most opportunities to support your child’s development on a daily basis and therefore have a key role in supporting your child’s communication and language development.
In the first video we have a look at communication and what is involved when people communicate with each other. You’ll find out how communication and language typically develops in children and why play is so important in the process. Following that we’ll explore how you can support your child’s communication skills though your daily interactions and every day activities and share some strategies to encourage language development.
In the second video we consider how your child interacts, whether they need to ask for things and how you can help your child to learn new words and join words together. We’ll look at how you can create opportunities to help your child learn and use words and think about the language we use as adults when talking to children and the different types of words most helpful for language development.
Early Language development videos
We recommend watching the first video and taking time to implement the strategies discussed before watching the second video. If, after watching both videos and implementing the strategies over a couple of months, you don’t see an improvement in your child’s talking then you might want to consider contacting our advice line. A ‘Request for Assistance’ might be appropriate.
