Videofluroscopy Clinic
Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership
What is a Videofluroscopy?
Videofluoroscopy (VF) is a video xray assessment of swallow function which can be carried out as part of the assessment and management of a swallowing difficulty (dysphagia). A individual’s Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) may request this if they feel they need more information regarding the nature of a swallowing difficulty to support decision making and management for that person. Whilst it can be a valuable additional assessment it not always necessary as part of the SLT management plan.
Who are we?
The VF clinic at Woodend Hospital is a well-established Grampian wide service which provides an out-patient service across the whole of Grampian and the Northern Isles (where no VF facilities are available at present). The clinic at Woodend offers an efficient and accessible assessment to almost all potential referrals and allows for patient access in their own/specialist seating (therefore accommodating those with poor mobility or difficulties with seated balance). For those able to transfer, our specialist chair also allows for full oesophageal screening, which is often a key element of the full swallow assessment process.
When would a VF be considered?
Patient groups attending for VF at Woodend are very varied and can cover any potential aetiology and diagnosis. Some examples of frequent referrals would be adults with learning disabilities, those presenting with a functional neurological disorder, neurological disorders such as MS, PD and MND and frail elderly patients. Anyone seeking referral for VF must have a named SLT and referrals are generally received via the SLT responsible for a patient’s management.
What do we do?
The clinic is run jointly with SLT and radiology staff and this unique staffing set up allows for great specialist expertise and very good team working. There can be immediate feedback for the patient and their SLT the ability to discuss and consider observations in the instant, which is hugely beneficial to all involved.
