Specialist Neurological Rehabilitation Team
Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership
Who are we?
We are a team of therapists working as part of small multi-disciplinary teams based within the neurological rehabilitation pathway. These teams are based at the Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (an in-patient setting at
Woodend Hospital), Horizons Rehabilitation Centre for out-patient services and the neurological home-link team to support people in their own homes. These teams are made up of a number of professions including Doctors, nursing staff, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Dieticians, Neuropsychologists and Pharmacists.
Who do we work with?
We work with individuals who experience speech, language and/or swallowing difficulties following a brain injury or as a result of a progressive neurological condition e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease.
We have a person centred approach to rehabilitation and encourage individuals to be involved in setting goals around what is important to them and what they hope to achieve during their treatment period.
What do we do?
Communication
We will provide assessment and treatment if you have a specific speech, language and/or communication difficulty to enable you to communicate to the best of your ability and to minimise the effects of communication difficulty. This may mean working directly on your speech or introducing alternative forms of communication if appropriate.
We aim to help individuals succeed in their environment and enable them to participate in the wider community.
We see patients in 1-1 sessions at the bed side or in the Speech Therapy room.
Where appropriate, group activities may also be offered to allow more practice of skills and strategies worked on in individual sessions.
Swallowing
We also provide assessment and treatment if you are experiencing difficulties swallowing.
After assessment we will be able to provide recommendations to help ensure you are swallowing safely. This may include modifying the consistency of your diet and fluids and/or introducing specific exercises aimed at improving the safety of individual components of your swallow.
